Medical coding is a certificate-level program that prepares individuals to perform specialized data entry, classification, and record keeping procedures related to medical diagnostic, treatment, billing, and insurance documentation. Graduates of this program are eligible to sit for the Certified Professional Coder certification examination. Upon successful completion of this certification examination, the individual is eligible to become a Certified Professional Coder (CPC).

Graduates of the Medical Coding certificate are prepared to work in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, physician offices, long-term care facilities, and home health agencies. Employment opportunities can also be found in nontraditional healthcare areas such as insurance companies, government agencies, computer software companies, as well as consulting firms.
