President’s Cabinet
Meeting Notes
September 27, 2010
The NMCC President’s Cabinet met at 10:00 a.m. on September 27, 2010 in the President’s conference area. Present - Tim Crowley, Bill Egeler, Ron Fitzgerald, Jason Parent, and Diane Peters.
President Crowley reported on the September MCCS President’s Council meeting. Items that were discussed included accountability guidelines which will be drafted at the system level and distributed to the presidents for discussion; and fall enrollment reported numbers which prompted a lengthy discussion on how each college counts; (the numbers showed NMCC’s enrollment down by 4%). The was a presentation to the Presidents by Elliot Cutler, independent candidate for governor.
President Crowley reported that the MCCS Foundation press conference was very impressive. The system foundation has raised over six million dollars.
President Crowley will meet with the Jerry Chassie, CEO of Bangor Hydro, on September 28, and he will also attend the Maine Higher Education Conference on Education in Portland on the 28th.
Jason Parent distributed a fall events calendar and reported that his office is finalizing the Fall and Winter Expo which will be held on October 2 and 3. The development office is also planning the Employee Recognition Luncheon which is scheduled for October 8.
Jason reported that Foundation Executive Committee met on September 21. He noted that Vickie Smith chaired the meeting as Brian Hamel was away attending a family funeral.
Jason announced that no one has applied for the foundation’s Investing in Innovation funds this year.
Ron Fitzgerald reported that he attended the MCCS Academic Deans meeting on September 23. He noted that the topics of interest at the meeting were the program review process and adapting to the Jenzabar software.
Ron asked if there were any further changes to the committee list. Dr. Egeler requested that the Student Satisfaction Committee be omitted from the list as the committee is going to be refocused and a new charge to the committee will be developed.
There will be EX software training for the department chairs on September 28. Ron reported that there is currently some misconceptions about the relationship of EX and the EMS scheduling software.
Accreditation visits will occur in November for the Medical Assisting and EMS programs.
Ron reported that there has not been a date set for the NATEF ASE program certification visit for the automotive collision repair program.
Dr. Egeler reported that he will schedule a meeting with Karen Ouellette to discuss scheduling and improving enrollment in the St. John Valley.
The MCCS benchmarks are due October 1, 2010.
Dr. Egeler is working on completing the enrollment data for the NEASC Follow-up Report.
Dr. Egeler will attend the inauguration of Husson University new president on October 1, 2010.
Refund checks are scheduled to be mailed to students the week of September 27th.
President Crowley will ask Chuck Brown to send a statement to students discussing the refunds.
Dr. Egeler announced that a smoking hut has been ordered to be installed next to the walkway between the Christie and Mailman Buildings.
Dr. Egeler reported that he is communicating with the Maine State Police regarding processes for placement of security cameras on the NMCC campus.
Dr. Egeler noted that the admissions staff is currently entering data into the new system from the road. There are still questions on the number of stages of information necessary. He suggested that the college may want to bring someone to campus that has had experience using the Jenzabar system
President Crowley reviewed the agenda for the NMCC General Advisory Council with the President’s Cabinet. Agenda items include enrollment, new employees, fall events, energy conservation, facility space leased from the City of Presque Isle, and a joint meeting of NMCC/UMPI advisory councils.
President Crowley reported that there is health care funding available if the college develops a grant proposal for the funds. There was discussion on seeking funding to support the college’s effort in the St. John Valley. The concern is whether the college can fill the necessary applicant pool. Funds could possibly be used for student tuition or a faculty salary. There was a suggestion that if the nursing applicant numbers are not there, the college could offer medical assisting and/or medical coding in the St. John Valley if there is enough interest.
President Crowley reported that Dean Duplessis is working with the Haas Company to secure continuance of the entrustment program at the college. The precisions metals technology program has benefited from this program by having major equipment placed in the precisions metal lab without having to buy the equipment.
President Crowley gave an update on current personnel issues. A Search Committee is underway for the medical assisting instructor position. The accountant I position will be posted on September 27. The president reported that there is discussion systemwide on the faculty pay gap that will occur possibly in May 2011.
Jason Parent reported that he had received a call from Representative Ken Theriault looking for information on energy audit/technician training. Representative Theriault reported that he had a constituent contact him with questions on this issue.
The college has trained several instructors to teach this training, but they are not yet certified. There is paperwork that needs to be submitted to the state for their certification. It was reported that EMCC would be offering energy training in this area in the near future.
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectively recorded,
