Charge:  Composed of representatives from each department/area of the college, this committee conducts safety audits as needed of all areas of the college and reports findings to area managers with a copy to the president and vice president.  Recommends to the vice president health and safety training and/or professional development activities, and engages in other action as appropriate to recommend actions to assure a healthy and safe environment for out students and employees

The committee moved to accept the April minutes.  In regards to the minutes the committee should follow up on the items that were discussed at the previous meeting.

 

1)      Old Business

 

A)    Safety Training

     i)    Bureau of Labor Standards

·         SHAPE Program – There is an abatement action plan for each item and need to create a checklist and sign off when items are fixed.  The college will receive the SHAPE award once the items are corrected.

     ii)  Policy Review

i)        Send all policies to Robert to put on the NMCC website.  All policies should be consistent with standard format.  Once all policies are approved they are sent to the Management Team and policy numbers will be assigned to each one.

·         Confined Spaces Policy

·         Respiratory Protection

·         Electrical Policy

·         Fork Lift Policy

·         Fire Prevention Policy

·         Hazard Communication

·         Hearing Conservation Program

·         Hot Work

·         LOTO Program

·         LOTO Authorized Personnel Inspections

·         VDT Policy

·         Safety and Health Program

ii)   Steve Caron mentioned breaking down the top 5 policies such as the Emergency Action Plan and adding a checklist or flowchart

iii) Security has posted the emergency contact sheet next to every first aid kit around campus

iii) Safety Symposium held on March 31, April 1 & 2 turned out well.  Some items to        include for next year are having more staff, more advertising, and getting vendor’s      mailing lists

iv) LOTO inspections – Make list of people authorized

v)   Safety Training Records – Some work study students and adjuncts still need safety     training     

B)    Incidents

i)        Welding flash in the Welding Shop.  The incident happened on a Thursday night but Rick or Pam wasn’t informed until Monday.  The student did not get it treated. An incident form was filled out and documented.

C)    Smoking Policy Update

i)        Modify signage when policy goes into effect

ii)      Inform vendors that come on campus of the smoking policy

iii)    Plan on moving the smoking hut

D)    Policy Review

i)        Vehicle Use – Carl will send out for review

ii)      Emergency Medical Aid – First Aid

iii)    Emergency Action Plan

2)      New Business

A)    Hazard Assessment Review

i)        Campus electrician updated

B)    Campus Signage – Smoking, parking and directions to shops in Mailman Building

C)    Pam mentioned getting an emergency shut off or access to the panel for the diesel shop, Barry will add it to the summer projects list.  Look into putting an emergency shut off switch. Deadline for addressing this issue by September 1st.

D)    Welding Shop grinding area – Change policy to use safety glasses and use cotton clothing

E)     Training for new custodial staff have been completed
