Charge: The charge of this committee is to develop and implement a comprehensive assessment plan for determining institutional effectiveness.  The committee will examine existing assessment practices and strategies, and will explore, propose, implement and analyze new ones.  A primary function of this committee is to communicate ongoing and proposed assessment activities to the campus community

The Assessment Committee has accomplished the following during the 2009-2010 academic year:

1.       Proposed a dynamic and fluid five-year assessment cycle

2.       Reached consensus on education needs of committee and took steps towards meeting the needs:

a.       Four committee members attended NEEAN Conference in Worcester, MA in November 2009 and reported back to committee

b.      Ordered and distributed Assessing Student Learning: A Common Sense Guide by Linda Suskie for committee members

c.       Adopted the Suskie model of assessment as a means to educate all committee members on the path and timeline to implement effective assessment

d.      Learned to analyze and apply evidence-based research relevant to the assessment process

e.      Other specific educational activities reflected in Assessment Committee Meeting Minutes

3.       Developed a clearer understanding of the Program Curriculum Development and Evaluation Process:

a.       Reviewed some existing assessment practices (five year program reviews; SSI; CCSSE; anecdotal, informal faculty assessment; tracking benchmarks for licensing and certification; advisory committee input)

4.       Developed a preliminary model for the individualized program assessment process:

a.       Revised curriculum mapping in Liberal Arts, Business Administration, Precision Metals Manufacturing, and Medical Assisting, with the assistance and input of program faculty

5.       Introduced Assessment Committee activities to NMCC community:

a.       Conducted a workshop to inform faculty of assessment initiatives in January 2010

b.      Developed a plan for improved communication between the assessment committee and faculty

c.       Developed a plan to review  a common, recommended language of assessment with faculty

d.      Established a repository for assessment documents, artifacts, and resources for NMCC community

 

Projected goals to consider during the Fall 2010 semester:

 

1.       Increase campus outreach regarding assessment

a.       Send a letter to faculty members to communicate assessment information

b.      Work towards publishing assessment activities and information on NMCC website once Jenzebar is accessible

c.       Include an “Assessment Corner” in NMCC’s weekly newsletter, Towards Excellence

d.      Develop and administer a survey for faculty to track current  assessment practices; administer the survey during fall and spring semesters; use as an educational tool to report back to faculty what they are already doing (evaluating, assessing, etc.)

2.       Continue to educate Assessment Committee members:

a.       Send four committee members to NEEAN Conference in Keene, NH, June 2010

3.       Strive to complete curriculum mapping for all NMCC programs

4.       Work to clarify and document the five year assessment plan

5.       Review Fall 2010 goals and create goals for Spring 2011
