Retention Committee
3:00 p.m. Library Conference Room B CCSSE Workshop Bill Egeler, Johna Lovely, Dottie Martin, and Gail Roy attended the workshop at Eastern Maine Community College on November 2, 2011. Johna, Bill, and Gail shared information about the workshop. Bill indicated that the committee should distribute CCSSE data on campus. Committee will select certain areas to highlight and share via newsletter and TVs throughout campus. Information will be disseminated in brief “Did you know?” points. Commit to Complete—Bill Egeler The Phi Theta Kappa Commit to Complete initiative has been launched on NMCC campus. To learn more, visit the PTK website (http://www.cccompletioncorps.org/ptk) and see the links for the C4 (Community College Completion Corps) project. PTK is working to obtain five-star status and plans to support the Commit to Complete initiative for our campus. PTK student representative could not join us at this meeting and will attend a future meeting. Bill presented information on the nursing student commitment letter. He will share a copy with this committee. This has been extremely successful for nursing students. PTK would like to create a Commit to Complete letter for all students to sign. Retention committee members agreed to assist by providing a draft of key items. Areas to cover will be institution, PTK, faculty, staff, and student. Students will sign the pledge and PTK will promote and display publicly. Dick asked about accountability: how does the institution recognize whether it succeeds or fails and what does it do to address flaws in the system? Bill noted that accountability and assessment are ongoing. The committee accepted the task of creating a list of items for the letter and will send them to Gail Roy or bring to the next meeting. We will review at the next meeting. SSI Update – The Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI) Bill provided update. Five out of twenty-one classes have been returned to Cindy Albert. All surveys are due back December 21. Results will be received by mid/late January 2012. Committee members expressed special thanks to Cindy for all of her efforts in coordinating the survey process. Trio paired classes initiative Johna provided an overview on the paired classes. U.S. History and English Composition are paired with a study skills workshop. Students were signed up for the courses and the classes were free. Fourteen students were in the cohort. Roughly 6–7 attend regularly. Four students were failing in history. Johna worked with the students on test-taking skills. After the sessions, they scored above 80 percent on the next test. This is an at-risk population and this is the first attempt at offering a paired program to this group. Johna indicated that they have learned from this first experience and will modify the program for next semester. Students will be required to pay for these courses and if they finish the classes they will be reimbursed. The supplemental section will be added to the English Comp time and will not be labeled as supplemental. The English section will meet four times per week. College students and reading for pleasure Gail shared an article with members (Reading, Risk, and Reality: College Students and Reading for Pleasure). One of the areas on the CCSSE survey where our school scores below our peer group is the “reading on their own for pleasure of unassigned reading” as part of the academic rigor portion of the survey. Previously the library has held author talks, book signings, reading groups, and book displays on campus. We have participated in the Maine Humanities Council “Let’s Talk About It” reading series. The library is planning a Common Read program for spring 2012. We are soliciting book suggestions. Eric offered to send some suggestions to Gail. A call for suggestions will appear in the campus newsletter. Dick mentioned that utilizing new technology for reading such as iPads and e-readers may be a novel way to encourage students to read for pleasure. He noted that this would be a good way to introduce new technology to students. Dick asked whether instructors might offer extra credit for additional unassigned readings as a means to encourage reading. Spring 2012 registration Bill provided an update. Registration is going well and he recently sent information to instructors so they could track the registration progress of their advisees. Shellie noted that this was very helpful. The library and academic success center have staffed the media center with students to assist those who need assistance. Student Affairs has added a laptop to allow students to register in the office. There are plans to staff the trades building with a laptop and printer and registration support. Next meeting is scheduled for January 26, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in the library conference room B. Gail made a motion to adjourn. Dick seconded the motion. Meeting adjourned at 4:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Gail Roy Last changed: Dec 09 2011 at 4:39 PM Back |
