Items of Business
· Election of Committee Chair: Stephen Caron · The committee accepted the October 28, 2015 minutes as presented. · Old Business - Security Camera Request by Tom Richard – Barry informed the committee that the request for the installation of cameras in the Wellness Center had been approved. President Crowley has requested a cost analysis before the process moves forward. - There was discussion regarding how people, especially the public, are notified regarding the use of surveillance cameras. Barry mentioned that informational stickers on doors and windows has been a past practice, but the location of this information may need to be reviewed and updated. - A copy of the Security Camera policy was provided to everyone for informational purposes. Everyone was reminded that the policy is available on the portal. - There was discussion about providing a map indicating current locations of cameras so that a plan could be developed regarding the expansion of cameras to more of the remote public areas, such as parking lots. - Safety Training – Barry Ingraham 1. Slips, Trip & Fall – will be scheduled for the last week in February 2. Visual Display Terminal – will be scheduled for the last week in February · Incident Reports - Mike Williams reported that there were five (5) incidents last month (4 students and 1 employee). He then outlined the procedure for reporting an incident and the importance of meeting the 24 hour reporting period. He reminded the committee that there are forms for reporting an incident, all of which can be found on the portal. - Barry, Mike and Peter will work together to complete the required after incident investigation. · Fire Drill Report - There have been day and evening drills in all buildings this semester. Barry sent a follow-up email to campus staff reporting on the response to the drills. · Umpqua Community College - On November 16, Rani Belanger, a local school counselor and Red Cross Volunteer made a presentation to members of the Safety Committee and President’s Cabinet regarding her experience as a counselor, following the recent shooting incident at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. Copies of Rani’s notes were distributed for information and discussion. President Crowley mentioned that Chief Erwin of the P.I. Police Department was also present for that meeting. He felt the presentation was informative and reminded him that it is important to review the College’s current response plan and see how it needs to be updated. He further mentioned that Chief Erwin expressed his cooperation in working with NM to evaluate and revise the current action plan. - President Crowley emphasized the importance of getting everyone on the RAVE Alert System. Although it may not always be the most appropriate means of communication with the college community, we should have up-to-date information.
· Policy Review - Emergency Action Plan – Prior to the meeting, members of the committee were sent, via e-mail, a copy of the recently revised EAP. Several members had some suggestions and it was recommended that all edits be submitted to Dottie within the next two weeks. Once the information is corrected then the document will be reformatted for easier use. - There was discussion about how to best practice the response plan, especially as it might relate to an active shooter on campus. - It was decided that the Safety Committee would meet again before the beginning of the spring semester for this topic only. - Require Yearly Review: - Members of the committee agreed to review the following policies and be prepared to report at the next regular meeting of the Safety Committee. 1. VDT Policy – Dottie · New Business - Drones on Campus – Dottie Martin Simply for future discussion purposes, Dottie handed out an informational flyer regarding issues to be considered regarding allowing drones on campus. There was some discussion about the pros of using the technology associated with drones for instructional purposes versus inappropriate use outside the learning environment.
Round Table · Rob – new gun law for Maine, remind student of NM policy, revision to Student Handbook · Speed camera in front of the Wellness Center – north end report (3 days, 1337) · President Crowley thanked everyone who had assisted with the recent evacuation of Presque Isle Middle School students and staff to the NM gym, due to a fire in the PIMS office. He reported that by the time the students and staff arrived the gym was ready for their use.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be scheduled early in January.
