1)      Approval of meeting minutes from November 12, 2013

·         Wayne Kilcollins moved to accept the minutes

·         Lynne Nelson-Manion seconded the motion

·         Minutes approved

2)      Review of CCSSE three focus items for spring semester

·         In response to career counseling: Lorie Smith plans to do workshops and update website with career related resources; if these items could be measured or tracked, the data could be added to the retention plan; Johna Lovely plans to do some on-campus groups with Liberal Studies students and transfer students to improve retention and involvement; trade instructors do this by working with perspective employers and setting up internships; graduate surveys and employer satisfaction surveys; we should make an effort to track and house these activities

·         In response to reading outside the classroom – Eric Pelkey proposed to lead the NMCC Common Read for Spring 2014 by offering students a graphic novel to increase engagement; March by John Lewis ties in with the NEH Civil Rights grant for spring semester; Eric will set dates for the common read activities

·         Active and collaborative learning: Laura McPherson will do more workshops and do workshops geared toward instructors; Skip Downing On Course – came last January – are faculty using those techniques?; consider asking faculty at the January development day what they are doing for active/collaborative learning and report out; College Success reporting – those numbers should change by the time of the next CCSSE because we have instituted a COL class and Trio does this type of work with the Liberal Studies Learning Community

·         Retention Information -- Lynne/residential life is tracking participation in campus events and she and Anthony Viola plan to report out these results in a workshop on the January Professional Development day; Lynne will bring the form to share to see if it could be used to track data; the Development Office could be used as a clearing house for this kind of information

·         Lynne volunteered to make an effort to gather information on campus events that might increase involvement and retention during January and February as an experiment to see how hard it is to centralize data; Lynne will do this at the first of the semester and report out at the next committee meeting

3)      CCSSE Key Findings report for Professional Development Day

·         January Professional Development day – Gail and Jen will present key findings in a workshop

4)      SSI Update

·         27 classes were selected to be surveyed; 23 have been completed

·         Cindy Albert gathered completed surveys results

·         Draft of retention plan to be completed by mid to late January; committee will need to review this

5)      Other Business

·         No other business

6)      Adjournment – the meeting adjourned at 1 pm.

The next committee meeting is scheduled for late January – date TBA

Respectfully submitted,
