Policy #:     6450:14
Subject:      Cancellation of Institutional Activities
Section:      Business Operations
Effective:   1/90

Procedure Objective:

Provide a consistent, yet flexible campus policy concerning cancellation or postponement of institutional activities in unusual or emergency circumstances.

Procedure Considerations:

Although the main institutional imperative is to adhere to the academic calendar and other scheduling commitments, there are circumstances under which it is impractical or unsafe to do so.  Common sense dictates that in extreme weather conditions, physical plant emergencies, or other unusual contingencies, that the institution must be closed to normal operations.

The campus president and the management team must judge whether local conditions are sufficiently severe to threaten the safety and well-being of faculty, students, and/or staff.  In the event of inclement weather, there are several resources to assist in making decisions to cancel or delay normal operations:

National Weather Service
State and Local Police
Department of Transportation
Other school officials
Municipal officials

Generally speaking, three options are available:

  1. Classes delayed – Sometimes, weather conditions may make travel difficult and slow.  In such cases, delaying the start of on-campus activities will allow employees and students time to arrive safely.
  2. Classes canceled/Institution closed – In extreme situations, the institution may be closed to all activities except emergency operations.
  3. Classes canceled/Continuing Education Division an Evening Courses – This will be announced by radio prior to 6:00 p.m.

Procedure Statement:

The President, in consultation with the management staff, will determine if adverse local conditions warrant delay or cancellation of normal activities and operations.  If possible, a decision will be made by 6:00 a.m. for day classes, and by 4:00 p.m. for evening classes and announced on radio and television as soon thereafter as possible.
