Policy #:     6441:10
Subject:      Fire Drills
Section:      Business Operations (6400-6499)
Effective:    Ongoing

It is the policy of NMCC to promote and assure compliance with all appropriate safety procedures in campus buildings.  The following procedure will be used to assure that this policy is enacted.

  1. A standing committee representative of faculty and staff will be appointed annually to make recommendations to the President regarding campus safety.
  2. All NMCC classrooms, shops, offices and buildings will publicly display an evacuation plan showing routes of emergency exits.  All supervisors and instructors will be asked to review this procedure with their employees and students.  Each instructor is asked to cover and execute this evacuation procedure during the first class of each section at the beginning of each semester.  The Maintenance Department will be responsible for executing a minimum of two fire drills per semester.
  3. The use of facilities coordinator will make all off-campus groups which use our building space aware of the procedures outlined in statement #2.
  4. Andrews Hall will have a floor-by-floor exit procedure established.  All Andrews Hall pull-boxes will be tested at least once a semester and documentation kept establishing the date and condition of the test.  A minimum of two fire drills per semester at different times of the day is required and will be coordinated by Maintenance Department with the assistance of Residential Life and Food Services Staff.  Documentation will be kept on file in the office of Residential Life.
  5. An evacuation procedure will be established for Reed Commons and will be displayed in appropriate areas within that facility.  One fire drill per semester is to occur within the Commons to be coordinated by the Maintenance Department with the assistance of Residential Life and Food Services Staff.
  6. The Apartment Complex will have an established evacuation procedure.  The Apartment Complex will be handled by giving each apartment an orientation on emergency exit procedures and semester checks on all smoke detectors and fire extinguishers located in the Apartment Complex area.  The office of Residential Life, in conjunction with the Maintenance Department, will be responsible for the execution of this plan.
