Policy #:     6441:01
Subject:      Refund Policy for Military Personnel Due to Voluntary and/or Involuntary Activation in Cases of a National or International Crisis
Section:      Business Operations (6400-6499)
Effective:    11/90

Given that Northern Maine Community College serves various members of the military forces of the United States, the college will not penalize financially or academically such a person as the result of voluntary and/or involuntary activation in cases of national or international crises.  The following procedures will be followed in cases of such crises.

FINANCIAL

  1. Military personnel enrolled in NMCC courses will receive non-punitive grades of Incomplete or Withdrawal depending upon the feasibility of completion of the course upon return.  Military students receiving a withdrawal grade either at the end of the semester or upon return will not be required to pay their portion of tuition or fee charges upon re-enrolling in the same course.
  2. Should such a student be living in campus residential life facilities, the student shall be entitled to a prorated refund of the room and board charges.

READMISSION/REGISTRATION

  1. The student’s file shall remain active for twelve months.  Upon request, this status may be extended if military service exceeds twelve months.  The student shall forward to the Dean of Students official written verification of departure and return dates upon return.
  2. The college will guarantee a slot in the student’s original program of study, provided that the student notifies the institution on timely basis of intent to return to college. (This guarantee will exist for one semester after the student returns.)

If above procedures do not adequately address a particular service member’s situation, NMCC will consider waivers or revisions in the procedures so that the military student is not negatively impacted form a financial or academic perspective.
