This procedure statement will provide the proper direction for curriculum improvement through new course implementation.  The step-by-step procedure with explanation is as follows:

  1. Initiator consults the appropriate Department Chairperson for any need and feasibility documentation (program advisory committee concurrence, program impact, course costs, equipment needs, etc.).
  2. Upon satisfactory fulfillment of step #1, the Department Chair will supply the initiator with the necessary paperwork to proceed with the new course proposal (requires COURSE PROPOSAL FORM).
  3. Initiator, with any necessary assistance form the Department Chairperson, will complete the form in full and return it in a timely manner to the Department Chairperson.
  4. Concurrently with step #3, the Department Chairperson will ensure the completion of the CURRICULUM REVISION FORM.
  5. The Department Chairperson will inspect the forms for accuracy and completeness and then forward them with any supporting documentation to the Curriculum Committee Chairperson.
  6. The Curriculum Committee Chairperson will review the new course proposal and then forward the proposal to the Vice-President for input and counsel.
  7. After review by the Vice-President, the proposal will be placed for consideration in the next available Curriculum Committee agenda slot.
  8. Copies of the documents to be addressed will be distributed to committee members no later than five weekdays prior to the scheduled meeting.
  9. The initiator and any affected faculty member(s) will be invited and encouraged by the Department Chairperson to attend the meeting which will address the proposal to provide support and any necessary clarification.
  10. The Curriculum Committee will address the proposal by discussion and will approve or disapprove by majority vote.
  11. If the new course proposal is approved by the Curriculum Committee, the proposal, with the supporting documentation, will then be forwarded to the Vice-President for action.  Notification of the Vice-President’s action will be provided to the Curriculum Committee Chairperson with 15 days of Curriculum Committee action.
  12. If the new course proposal is disapproved by the Curriculum Committee or the Vice-President, the proposal, with the supporting documentation, will be returned to the appropriate Department Chairperson with five weekdays for revision and resubmission, or termination.
  13. All new course proposals approved by the Vice-President will be forwarded to the President for final approval.
  14. If the President elects not to give final approval, the proposal shall be returned to the Vice-President with written comments denoting the reasons for disapproval and/or request for further modification.  Notification of the President’s action will be provided to the Vice-President with 15 days of the Vice-President’s action.
  15. All curriculum revisions will become effective the following fall semester.
  16. All credit course proposals determined to be effective for the following fall semester will be finalized no late than March 15 of each year.  Revisions to be inserted into the college catalog during a catalog revision year will be finalized no later than February 1 of that year.
