Subject:      Curriculum Revision
Section:      Academic Affairs (6200-6299)
Effective:    3/26/91, revised 10/94

This procedure statement will provide the proper direction for curriculum improvement through revision.  The step-by-step procedure with explanations is as follows:

  1. Initiator consults the appropriate Department Chairperson for any need and feasibility documentation (program advisory committee concurrence, program impact, course costs, equipment needs, etc.).
  2. Upon satisfactory fulfillment of step #1, the Department Chairperson will supply the initiator with the necessary paperwork to proceed with the revision (requires CURRICULUM REVISION FORM).
  3. Initiator, with any necessary assistance from the Department Chairperson, will complete the form in full and return it in a timely manner to the Department Chairperson.
  4. The Department Chairperson will inspect the form for accuracy and completeness.  Once this is done, the Chair will forward it with any supporting documentation to the Curriculum Committee Chairperson.
  5. The Curriculum Committee Chairperson will review the revision and then forward it to the Vice-President, for input and counsel.
  6. After review by the Vice-President, the revision will be placed for consideration in the next available Curriculum Committee agenda slot.
  7. Copies of documents to be addressed will be distributed to committee members no later than five weekdays prior to the scheduled meeting.
  8. The initiator and any affected faculty member(s) will be invited and encouraged by the Department Chair to attend the meeting which will address the revision(s) to provide support and any necessary clarification.
  9. The Curriculum Committee will address the revision by discussion and will approve or disapprove by majority vote.
  10. If the revision is approved by the Curriculum Committee, the revision, with the supporting documentation, will then be forwarded to the Vice-President for action.  Notification of the Vice-President’s action will be provided to the Curriculum Committee Chair within 15 days of Curriculum Committee action.
  11. If the revision is not approved by the Curriculum Committee or the Vice-President, the revision, with the supporting documentation, will be returned to the appropriate Department Chairperson for modification and resubmission, or termination.
  12. All curriculum revisions approved by the Vice-President will be forwarded to the President for final approval.
  13. If the President elects not to give final approval, the proposal shall be returned to the Vice-President with written comments denoting reasons for non-approval and/or request for further modification.  Notification of the President’s action will be provided to the Vice-President within 15 days of the Vice-President’s action.
  14. All curriculum revisions will become effective the following fall semester.
  15. All revisions determined effective for the following fall semester will be finalized no later than March 15 of each year.  Revisions to be inserted into the college catalog during a catalog revision year will be finalized no later than February 1 of that year.
