Policy # 6210:01
Subject: Class Attendance
Section: Academic Affairs
Effective: Ongoing
Class attendance is the student’s responsibility, and is a matter between the instructor and the student. Regular attendance and punctuality at all classes is expected. Excessive absence may interfere with the successful completion of a course of study, as well as with the smooth, effective flow of instruction. To encourage students to accept their responsibility to attend class, the following policy is established:
1. The course instructor is required to announce and to interpret a specific attendance policy for his/her class at the beginning of the semester, and to include this policy in writing to his/her students in the course syllabus.
2. Where some academic departments have arrived at a departmental attendance policy, each instructor is obliged to present, to honor, and to enforce that policy.
3. The instructor is required to maintain an attendance record for each class in order to meet institutional requirements as well as those of external constituencies/agencies.
Attendance Violation Procedures:
A. If a student is in violation of the course’s attendance policy, the instructor will complete an Attendance Warning form from the information portal. This warning will be completed and submitted electronically to the student, and copied to the student’s advisor and to counseling staff. The notification will include a “Reply Requested” notation which will allow the instructor to determine whether the student has received the warning
B. After one written warning, if attendance is not maintained, the instructor may complete a Recommendation for Dismissal form from the information portal. This form will be electronically submitted to the student, copied to the student’s advisor, to counseling staff, to the Registrar, and to the Vice President/Academic Dean.
C. The Vice President/Academic Dean will investigate the matter and return a prompt written response to the recommendation (i.e., within three business days of receiving electronic notification of the dismissal recommendation) to the aforementioned parties.
D. The student is required to attend class and complete all work assignments until the written response is received.
E. Students being dismissed from a class for nonattendance will receive a grade of AW (Administrative Withdrawal) if the dismissal occurs before the 12th week of the semester (inclusive). Afterward, a grade of F will be recorded.
