The Interpretive Guideline for the Standard on Faculty as set forth by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges, Inc, Commission on Technical and Career Institutions is as follows:

  1. Faculty Teaching Technical Courses:
Technical specialty courses in postsecondary programs leading to certificates, diplomas, or degrees should be taught by faculty, whether full-time or adjunct, having both appropriate academic preparation and work experience.  The minimum academic credential for faculty is an academic degree at least one degree level above that which they are teaching.  The masters degree is the minimum academic credential for faculty teaching technical courses where college transfer is the primary goal or in those programs where substantial numbers of students transfer to baccalaureate programs in the same technical field.

Teaching faculty must have technical competence in the fields in which they teach.  In certain exceptional cases, unique experience and demonstrated competence may substitute for the minimum academic credential.  Such exceptions must be justified by the institution on an individual basis.

In all cases, it is the responsibility of the institution to keep on file documentation of work experience, certifications, transcripts and other qualifications if these are to substitute for or supplement formal academic preparation.

All faculty are expected (a) to remain current in their specialized field, and (b) to be engaged in ongoing professional development.
  1. Faculty Teaching General Education Courses
All full-time and adjunct faculty teaching humanities, social and behavioral sciences, English, natural sciences, or mathematics within programs leading to certificates, diplomas, or degrees must have completed at least 18 graduate semester hours in their teaching field and hold a masters degree.  In certain exceptional cases, unique experience and demonstrated competence may substitute for advanced academic preparation.

Such exceptions must be justified by the institution on an individual basis.

In all cases, it is the responsibility of the institution to keep on file documentation of work experience, certifications, and other qualifications if these are to substitute for or supplement formal academic experience.

All faculty are expected (a) to remain current in their specialized field, and (b) to be engaged in ongoing professional development.
