Policy #: 6115:10
Subject: Recruiting, Admitting, and Hiring
Section: Personnel (6100-6199)
Effective: Ongoing
The success of NMCC’s Affirmative Action Plan will be dependent on the role that each employee has in promoting an environment that promotes non-discrimination.
As students and potential students of NMCC interact with the personnel of the college, they are exposed to attitudes and behaviors which give them messages about who they are, how they are valued, and what they may become. Therefore, administrators, department chairperson, instructors, support staff, and resident assistants, or any student acting in an official capacity, must take appropriate action to prevent discrimination.
1. EMPLOYMENT
- NMCC will recruit in such a way that under-represented groups will have an equal opportunity to apply for and be hired into all positions. The Equal Opportunity Committee will exercise an oversight capacity in securing and maintaining data to support evidence of compliance by this college.
- All personnel placement (administrative, professional, clerical, contractual) must be preceded by announcements of job openings in local and state papers, or state releases, sufficiently in advance of any deadline so that any interested person may apply. In an effort to recruit under-represented groups, statistical data on the availability within the state of qualified individuals from those groups will be reviewed. All job announcements will state that NMCC is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Copies of all such announcements and their dates and places of issue will be submitted to the EOC. The EOC will maintain applicant flow data including the following information:
- Name of applicant or inquirer
- Job opening
- Date of application
- Sex when stated by applicant
- Race when stated by applicant
- Action taken
- Recruiting Procedure:
- Preparation of a job description and submission to the EOC for review;
- Establishment of minimum criteria and salary range;
- Advertisement of position via recruiting sources; i.e.;
- Local newspapers
- Statewide newspapers
- Professional organizations
- Review of utilization analysis and goals for hiring;
- Development of an evaluation instrument in conjunction with the EOC;
- Selection of a screening/selection committee consisting of males and females and an EOC representative, to be done by the President or his/her designee. The role of the EOC representative will be to assure compliance with non-discriminatory policies.
2. STUDENTS
- NMCC is committed to providing Equal Education Opportunities. No person will be denied admission to the college on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, handicap, or age. The college does not discriminate against or exclude any person from admission due to pregnancy or recovery there-from. NMCC will not make pre-admission inquiries as to the marital or parental status of an applicant for admission.
- Recruitment: NMCC utilizes a multiple approach to students recruitment including media advertising, recruiter school visitations, participation by recruiter and/or instructors in college nights, invitations to high schools for college tours, open house activities to increase public awareness, as well as catalogs and brochures. Contact is also made with Vocational Rehabilitation, high school adult education programs and cooperating agencies.
- Admission Procedure: Application for admission to NMCC is a two-step process, involving (1) submitting transcripts, references and other material, and (2) having an on-campus interview.
Step One: Each applicant must make certain that NMCC receives the following:
- Standard application form (completed and mailed by the applicant).
- Application fee of $20.
- Evidence of high school graduation or its equivalent.
- Official high school transcript listing courses, grades, and standardized test scores (to be mailed directly to NMCC by the high school).
- Official transcript of any previous post-secondary work.
- Three letters of reference are required for admission to the ADN ProgramNotification of eligibility for Veteran’s Administration assistance or other financial aid.
Step Two: An interview on campus is required of all applicants to NMCC. The purpose of the interview is two-fold: to give the college more information about the applicant and to give the applicant a first-hand look at the college and its facilities. Applicants may also clear up any questions they have about NMCC or its programs.
In the admission process, an Assessment and Placement Test for Community Colleges is given to determine if developmental classes should be taken to enhance the student’s progress in the program chosen. Last changed: Feb 25 2008 at 10:23 AM
