PREFACE
Self-Study Process
Northern Maine Technical College began its self-study in the spring of 2002. The self-study project has resulted in a report which describes the institution's current context and how it compares to the CIHE Standards for Accreditation. Beginning with its initial CTCI
accreditation in 1975, NMTC has sought to be identified as a dynamic post-secondary institution serving the career preparation needs of citizens within its service area. Its planning and assessment process has evolved to become an effective mechanism for enhancement of programs and services and was an integral part of the review process for this report. With the addition of the AA degree/liberal studies program and completion of the CIHE accreditation requirements, NMTC will have attained its goal of becoming a comprehensive community/ technical college. The self-study process was initiated by the campus president through a charge to the strategic planning committee to take the responsibility for the self-study. The strategic planning committee utilized existing campus committees where possible, believing that this would allow people familiar to a particular discussion to play a leadership role in the development of the response to a particular standard. Members of the strategic planning committee include:
Wendy Bradstreet, accountant, business office Daryl Boucher, nursing faculty Timothy Crowley, college president Jane Dailey, VP for nursing, The Aroostook Medical Center, general advisory council representative Gerald Donovan, director of finance William Egeler, dean of students Ron Fitzgerald, general education department chair Sonja Fongemie, dean of continuing education Betsy Harris, registrar Barry Ingraham, director of information services Betty Kent-Conant, nursing department chair Brian McDougal, trade/technical occupations faculty Diane Peters, administrative assistant to the president Peggy O?Kane, assistant dean for learning resources Gary Soucie, business technology department chair Patricia Sutherland, director of development/college relations Terry Overlock, trade/technical occupations department chair David Raymond, general education faculty Nathan Willigar, student senate president David Raymond, humanities/social sciences instructor in the general education department, serves as chair of the committee.
Communications among and between participants has been facilitated
through the use of the campus electronic network. Early on, an internal
web page was established which allowed all campus constituents, both internal and external, to be aware of the process involved and the progress being made. Drafts of responses to each of the standards were
posted when completed for all to review and make comments. This facilitated the work of the committee and ensured that all had an opportunity to make comments.
A schedule for project completion was established and served as a guide for the committee to complete its work in a timely fashion. The purposes of the self-study were as follows:
1. To conduct a self-analysis/evaluation using the CIHE Standards for Accreditation and the results of the November 2000 accreditation visit to confirm that the college's mission is fulfilled in a manner comparable to other community colleges,
2. To utilize the process to identify areas of strength and areas in need of strengthening/ improvement to continue to enhance the quality of the programs and services provided by the college,
3. To utilize the findings to guide the strategic planning process for the purpose of further strengthening the institution, and 4. To achieve affiliation with the CIHE of NEAS&C. |
